Little figures, big stories

A joyful craft, shaped one piece at a time.

Artisans turn simple wooden shapes and give them personality with colour, clothing and tiny painted details. Choosing a maker-connected piece supports the hands and skills behind this living craft.

The making process

From wood to a familiar face.

From preparing the wood to painting the final expression, every stage adds skill and character. Explore the process behind the rounded forms that make Channapatna toys instantly recognisable.

Select and prepare

Wood is cut and prepared so it can be shaped smoothly and evenly on the lathe.

Turn the form

The rotating lathe lets the artisan shape balanced cylinders, spheres, wheels and rounded bodies.

Smooth the surface

The turned form is refined so curves feel continuous and the surface is ready for colour.

Add colour

Traditional lacquerware uses colour and friction on the lathe; some contemporary figures also use painted surface details.

Finish by hand

Faces, dress and custom details are painted and checked before the piece is packed.

Watch the workshop process

Rhythm, repetition and a trained hand.

The lathe gives each form its symmetry. The artisan controls pressure, shape, surface and timing; later painting turns repeated forms into individual people and stories.
